GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER

Well, you also may know this one, but it is an activity I always use during these first days when people, especially at a school of languages, do not know each other. It's great for breaking the ice and feeling less embarrassed since everyone participates because it's a game and they always want to guess the answer.

Ok, for this task you must write 3 words about yourself on the board. Try not to think of very simple words, make it difficult so that they must ask more questions and more elaborated ones. Let's make them rack their brains!! The aim here is to get them to talk and to ask questions, so it's a good exercise to practice grammar, too. For example, I write 13 on the board and they start by asking: Is it the name of your street? Is it your favourite number? And so on! This one in particular is very complicated, in my case, so I give them clues when they have run out of ideas.

Finally, they end up guessing all of them and then it's when I ask someone to go to the black board and write other 3 words. There's no need to go to the board, they can write them down on a piece of paper and then you do write them on the board for everyone to see them and the game starts again.

As Paul mentioned in his talk, it's a good a idea to give them some time to think about something which has to do with them and want to share with the class. From my experience, it works and it's a good exercise for both grammar and oral skills. Good luck, if you try!!
