My students make their own mini-whiteboard in September with a piece of white cardboard and a plastic pocket, like the one above.
They bring it along with a marker and a piece of old cloth to every class. It's a way to get your students' answers at the same time -on the count of three for example- and make sure that everyone is on the task.
You can use this technique to work with your students individually and also use one whiteboard per group/pair of students, assigning the role of the whiteboard keeper to one of them.
